School shade installation
Installing school shades in Saudi Arabia: plan the work around an operating school
· Shades Systems
A school may need a shaded courtyard or walkway while pupils and staff continue using the campus. The supply decision then depends on work boundaries, deliveries and the school timetable as well as design and covering. An early installation brief helps owners, consultants and contractors compare a defined scope rather than an attractive erection duration that omits approvals, foundations or reopening conditions.

Start with the operating timetable
Define the space: morning assembly, sport, waiting or circulation between buildings. Record arrivals, departures, breaks, examinations and after-school activities. A courtyard may be empty at one time while an adjacent route remains busy, so review the surrounding campus as well.
The useful output is a plan of the closure area, alternative routes, the proposed work window and its approval owner. Choosing a weekend does not establish that every foundation or erection stage fits into it.
Break the project into accepted stages
Separate site survey and service checks from design and material approval, then foundations, fabrication, installation and handover. Identify what can happen off site and what needs a campus closure. Agree inspection points before the next activity is released.
For phased delivery, review each stage with its equipment access, storage and separation arrangements. Dividing roof area does not necessarily create independent construction phases. The responsible project team approves the sequence for the actual site and system.
Coordinate work boundaries and deliveries
HSE guidance highlights defined site boundaries, managed access and exclusion of unauthorised people, with particular attention to children. It is a general planning reference, not a statement of Saudi legal requirements. The school and project team must determine the applicable arrangements and risk controls.
Show the delivery entrance, unloading and storage locations, and how works interface with occupied routes. Coordinate with the existing emergency arrangements and school management rather than treating the courtyard as a detached construction site.
Freeze the system brief before fabrication
Link the design of courtyard or walkway shades to covering function, support locations, clearances, drainage and existing interfaces. Consider HDPE or PVC/PVDF from the actual product evidence and functional brief; fabric names do not establish identical rain or classification performance.
Have the responsible designer approve the required drawings and calculations. Define responsibility for foundations, anchors, surfacing and adjacent works. A photograph of another installation cannot establish structural sizes or a surface-protection specification.
| Stage | Before the next activity starts |
|---|---|
| Survey and coordination | Site and service information, work boundaries and school interfaces |
| Design and fabrication | Approved drawings, materials and agreed inspections |
| Foundations and installation | Accepted preceding work, access and separation readiness |
| Handover and reopening | Closed observations, records and project acceptance |

Include factory readiness in the programme
Ask when drawings and materials are released, which agreed inspections precede dispatch and what must be confirmed before components reach the school. Off-site preparation supports coordination but is not evidence of a guaranteed erection time or a measured reduction in disruption.
Review component and anchor interfaces and access for handling. Lifting and access arrangements require competent planning. A site modification must be coordinated and approved; programme pressure does not resolve a design conflict.
Compare quotations on the same scope
Ask quotations to identify service detection, excavation, foundations, surfacing reinstatement, temporary separation, transport and waste handling. Establish responsibility for work permissions, coordination, acceptance and records rather than assuming that supply and installation includes everything.
Compare stage durations and start conditions, not just the days the erection crew is present. Approval progress, procurement, site conditions and the agreed scope influence delivery; area alone cannot establish a completion date.
Original photographs from Dar Al-Fikr Schools, Jeddah
The images show a completed covered sports court from the Dar Al-Fikr Schools album in the Shades Systems gallery. They support discussion of activity-area coverage and support positions. They do not establish that construction took place during term, prove a delivery period or certify the covering, fire performance or design loads.

Make reopening an acceptance milestone
Define completion checks, acceptance responsibility and how observations are closed, including the agreed fixing, covering, drainage and reinstatement scope. Request as-built information, inspection and cleaning instructions and the written warranty for the contracted system.
School management coordinates reopening after the relevant work and operating arrangements are accepted. Installing the final component is not itself a completed handover. Inspection of sports or play equipment also remains a separate responsibility from the canopy scope.
Bring the real school brief to the discussion
Share the school location, intended use, layout, site photographs, operating hours and available work window with Shades Systems. Include approved requirements and known service and surfacing information. Ask for a quotation that identifies stages, interfaces and exclusions so school shade manufacture and installation can be discussed around the actual campus.
Frequently asked questions
Can school shades be installed while teaching continues?
This must be assessed against location, separation, timing and arrangements approved by the school and project team. A blanket promise is inappropriate.
Is a holiday the best installation window?
A holiday may offer more flexibility, but surveys, approvals, procurement and site work still need an integrated programme. The holiday alone does not guarantee completion.
What should a school canopy quotation include?
Defined design, foundation, erection and reinstatement responsibilities, coordination and separation scope, programme conditions, handover records, maintenance and written warranty terms.
