Choosing a shading system
Shade Canopies for Saudi Projects: Rain Protection or Ventilation?
· Shades Systems
A project courtyard may need open shading while the route to reception needs to remain usable during rain. A single procurement line called shade fabric leaves the acceptance criteria unclear. Identify the areas that need protection, then review the covering, roof form, drainage and coverage boundaries as one coordinated system.

Zone the site by operational need
Mark staff and visitor waiting areas, the approach to the entrance, and outdoor areas where use can be reduced during rain. Discuss with the facility manager whether the need is daytime shade or a protected route supporting continued operation. Do not assume the entire courtyard needs an identical specification.
Water-permeable shadecloth is not a rainproof roof
GALE Commercial explains that knitted shade fabric lets water pass through and that orientation and rainfall affect its behaviour. A photograph or a material name is therefore insufficient evidence for a route that must remain protected. This reference explains a principle; it does not establish that we supply or installed that manufacturer’s product.
Define what rain protection must achieve
Mark the required area and its relationship with doors and passenger access. Ask the supplier to identify the proposed membrane grade and documentation, the performance boundaries of joints and edges, and the drainage arrangement. The name PVC/PVDF alone does not establish the performance of a complete installed system; review the product, details and responsibilities.
Consider ventilation in the whole space
Discuss open sides, neighbouring buildings, occupancy and operating hours with the designer. Do not turn a description of air-permeable fabric into a promised temperature reduction or a substitute for reviewing user comfort. Any performance percentage or product classification needs evidence for the specified grade.
| Project need | What to review | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Open shaded area | Permeability and operating use | Sun protection also excludes rain |
| Rain-critical route | Membrane grade, joints, edges and drainage | PVC/PVDF name proves system performance |
| User comfort | Surroundings, occupancy and hours | A photograph proves a temperature reduction |
| Operation and maintenance | Access, product instructions and responsibility | A universal interval or unwritten warranty |
Keep roof drainage coordinated with access
Have the team review runoff direction and discharge points against entrances and vehicle movements. Define who designs and supplies the water route after it leaves the canopy. Slopes, pipe sizes and fixings are site engineering decisions rather than values to copy from another project photograph.
Approve more than the colour
Before fabrication, agree drawings, samples, membrane documents and responsibility for joints and drainage. Before handover, review the agreed workmanship checks and product-specific instructions for inspecting and cleaning the covering and outlets. Avoid one maintenance interval for every system or a generic warranty without written terms.
Original project photographs: King Abdulaziz Airport parking
The original photographs retained in the Shades Systems project gallery illustrate a canopy in a large operational parking area. They do not establish rain resistance, membrane grade or joint details. No undocumented performance or specification is attributed to the project.

Make the purchase decision comparable
Start a discussion with Shades Systems using a plan distinguishing shaded areas from routes needing rain protection, together with intended use and scope boundaries. Compare proposals after aligning operating requirements and documentation, rather than comparing a unit price between systems intended to perform different functions.
Frequently asked questions
Does every HDPE fabric exclude rain?
Do not rely on the material name. Knitted shadecloth can pass water. Review the specific grade and system against the written requirement.
Does an open canopy exclude rain entering from the sides?
Roof coverage alone cannot establish that. Review the required protection boundary and lateral exposure with the designer.
