Car Parking Shades for Projects in Saudi Arabia: Why They Matter and How to Choose

· Shades Systems

A visitor’s or employee’s experience of a facility begins in its car park. For Saudi projects with outdoor parking, shading, column placement and pedestrian routes influence how people use the site every day. Parking shades deserve attention early in the design process as part of facility operations and the user experience.

Why parking shades matter to a project

Canopies provide shade for parked vehicles and for people getting in and out. Reducing direct solar exposure can improve outdoor comfort, but shade does not produce a fixed reduction in air temperature or replace measures for managing heat. OSHA identifies solar radiation, humidity and air movement as relevant factors. Its guidance is used here as a general technical reference, not as a Saudi regulatory requirement.

Coordinating canopy rows also helps integrate the parking area with building elevations, lighting and planting. Operational value depends on keeping doors, circulation lanes and routes to entrances usable. These benefits alone do not prove an increase in property value or an energy saving; either claim would require separate evidence.

Different facilities need different priorities

Hospital parking needs coordination with accessible spaces and routes to entrances. Offices and university campuses may prioritise coverage for staff, visitors and pedestrian connections. Industrial sites and fleet parking require an early review of vehicle types, heights and service movements.

These are planning considerations rather than universal specifications. The right solution follows the actual parking use, site plan and requirements reviewed by the project team.

Roof coverage is not the same as useful shade

A roof may cover a parking bay on a drawing while sunlight reaches it from the side during busy periods. Review sun direction, parking-row orientation and operating hours, then coordinate the canopy dimensions and height with the parking layout.

Check columns against vehicle doors, bay boundaries, ramps and pedestrian routes. A cantilever arrangement may reduce columns near the front of a bay, but requires a suitable structural and foundation design. Appearance alone is insufficient grounds for choosing it.

Choosing HDPE, PVC/PVDF or a metal roof

Start with the intended outcome: shading with an air-permeable fabric, a more enclosed membrane with a coordinated rainwater solution, or a rigid roof. Products within each material family differ. A material name alone does not establish performance; review the selected product’s data and its fixing and cleaning requirements.

SystemWhen to consider itWhat to check
HDPE fabricWhen shading and an air-permeable covering are prioritiesDocumented shading performance; do not assume rain exclusion; tension, fixings and maintenance
PVC/PVDF coveringWhen considering a closed membrane and coordinated rainwater managementFabric, coating, seams, slope and drainage; the material name alone does not prove performance
Metal roofWhen a rigid roof suits the facilityRoof type; heat and noise; corrosion protection; drainage and maintenance

From design to manufacturing and installation

Begin with a site survey, dimensions, existing utilities and operational requirements. Coordinate the layout with structural design, and have the responsible team assess wind, ground conditions, foundations and drainage under the project requirements and applicable code.

Following approval of drawings and materials, fabricate the structure, prepare suitable protection and check connections. Coordinate foundations, erection and membrane tensioning or roof fixing with site operations and the safety plan. Handover should include inspection of completed work, use and maintenance instructions, and the warranty for the contracted product.

Consider maintenance and lifecycle scope, not the roof price alone

Compare offers on the same design, foundation, frame, protection, covering, installation and maintenance scope. A lower price may exclude necessary work; a higher price does not establish better quality without clear specifications and inclusions.

A maintenance plan should address connections, covering condition, coatings and drainage as applicable, with cleaning to the supplier’s instructions. Report tears, loose components or corrosion for assessment rather than making improvised repairs. Warranty duration and coverage vary by product and contract and should not be generalised across all materials.

A real application: King Salman Science Oasis, Riyadh

The original project photographs show rows of HDPE parking shades supported by steel structures at King Salman Science Oasis. The project included manufacturing, supply and installation. The images illustrate the relationship between parking rows, columns, planting and circulation; they are not thermal-performance measurements or evidence of specifications that cannot be seen.

Before approving a parking shade system

Ask the design team where shade is needed and at what times, whether columns work with vehicle and pedestrian movement, how rainwater will be managed, and whether product data and maintenance requirements are clear. Review whether installation can proceed without unplanned disruption to facility operations.

For your commercial or institutional project, share the parking layout and intended use with Shades Systems to discuss a suitable solution and the manufacturing, supply and installation scope. A good decision starts with the site and selects a system that supports its operation.

Frequently asked questions

Is one material best for every project?

No. Selection depends on shading, rain, ventilation, structural design, maintenance and the data for the specific product.

Do parking shades replace walkway shading?

Not always. Assess the route from parking to the entrance; a separate walkway solution may be needed.

Can shades be added to an existing car park?

This can be assessed after reviewing buried utilities, foundations, levels, circulation and installation phasing. A photograph alone cannot establish suitability.
